Survival of the sweetest by Elizabeth Brown, MS, RD

Eat Like an Adult

I was born with a sweet tooth, and it never fell out. Perhaps you too suffer from the same affliction. We are not alone. Nearly 99 percent of all humans have a sweet tooth. What happened to the other one percent? I think they attached a string from that sweet tooth to a door knob and slammed the door on cravings.

Okay, my stats may have been fabricated, but here is a fact: we are all born with the desire for sweetness. Whether it is for fruit, candy or kisses, you simply can’t beat sweet and around this time of year, who can resist!

Sucrose and glucose and High Fructose Corn Syrup, oh my!

The Threat of Obesity is Just as Scary

Halloween was once a time when ancient Celtic people honored the end of the harvest season. These days however, it seems that Halloween celebrates the surplus of corn which gets manufactured into High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) and processed into synthetic confections making the masses more massive.

“High Fructose Corn Syrup is nutritionally equivalent to sugar and its fine in moderation,” according to television ads by the Corn Refiners Association. But is ultra refined corn really fine at all? HFCS is a type of corn syrup that has undergone processing to increase its fructose content and is then mixed with pure corn syrup. HFCS is manmade. It does not exist in nature.

Give Yourself a Fighting Chance

It’s national breast cancer awareness month. Think pink, then take action. Do something to reduce your risk of breast cancer today and everyday.

Women in the United States get breast cancer more than any other type of cancer except for skin cancer. It is second only to lung cancer as a cause of cancer death in women.

It is estimated that nearly 200,000 women and 1,700 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer each year.

Watermelon-eating dog prompts man to stab himself by Elizabeth Brown, MS, RD

Learning the way of the Watermelon

Watermelon season is ending in some parts of the U.S. but before it’s all over lets take this time to hone in on why watermelon is so beloved.

A recent news headline reads, “Watermelon-eating dog prompts man to stab himself.” A man was so distraught over losing his watermelon to a dog that he stabbed himself to show the dog’s owner that he was not afraid of pain. Wow! He sure does love that melon.
